PM Question of the Week - week 39 2014

Dear colleague, welcome to our "PM question of the week" newsletter for week 39 2014

A topic often overlooked by the PMP exam candidates are exercises: they may represent a small portion of the overall scope of the exam but we strongly encourage you to learn your way around them. Ignore PMP exercises at your risk!

This week PMP question:

Which is the critical path?
Activity Duration
A 3
B 2
C 8
D 4
E 2
F 2

a. START – A – D – F – STOP
b. START – A – D – E – F – STOP
c. START – A – E – F – STOP
d. START – B – C – F – STOP

Answer to question and explanation

The correct answer is d. START – B – C – F – STOP.

Explanation: Answer to this kind of questions is often very simple: the critical path is that of the longest total duration. Therefore you may either calculate the total duration of the four paths, or, better, you may recognize that paths a. and c. are subsets of b., and therefore can not be critical. The choice is then clearly only between paths b. an d. . Additionally, you may also recognize that activity F is included in all the paths, and then you can safely exclude it from the sums.
