PM Question of the Week - week 45 2014

Dear colleague, welcome to our "PM question of the week" newsletter for week 45 2014.

This week PMP question covers a project management concept that is treated in some detail in the PMBoK fifth edition, while it was almost absent in the previous PMBoK editions:

You have been directed to manage a project only a few days ago, and are undecided whether to escalate an important issue regarding a stakeholder to the project sponsor or not. What is the best thing to do?
a. Refer to the project governance framework.
b. Consult with the project team.
c. Refer to the stakeholder register.
d. Consider the enterprise environmental factors.

Answer to question and explanation

The correct answer is a. Refer to the project governance framework.

Explanation: project management governance is described in some detail in the last PMBoK edition, and it specifically includes the process to identify, escalate and resolve issues that arise during the project. Please note that the enterprise environmental factors include organizational governance, but that is separate from project governance. The stakeholder register is an auxiliary document providing information needed to identify and engage the stakeholders. Consulting the project team over important issues escalation is disingenuous at best.
