PM Question of the Week - week 47 2014

Dear colleague, welcome to our "PM question of the week" newsletter for week 47 2014.

In this issue of our weekly newsletter we focus on a key concept that is pervasively mentioned throughout the PMBoK, often as a process output: change requests.

Which of the following change request types usually impacts on the scope baseline?
a. Risk acceptance.
b. Defect repair.
c. Preventive action.
d. Corrective action.

Answer to question and explanation

The correct answer is b. Defect repair.

Explanation: preventive and corrective actions are aimed to align the project work with the baseline, and therefore they usually do not affect the baseline itself. Risk acceptance is a risk response strategy, not a type of change request. A defect repair change request is usually an output of the quality control or validate scope processes: it may be issued for example when a deliverable of the project has not been accepted for quality issues. As such, a defect repair usually directly affects the scope baseline of the project.
