PM Question of the Week - week 48 2014

Dear colleague, welcome to our "PM question of the week" newsletter for week 48 2014.

This week sample PMP exam question aims to test your knowledge of one of the seven "basic quality tools" introduced by the PMBoK: the quality control chart.

You are managing a project for Racrox Electronic Corporation aimed at developing a new series of touchscreen devices. A member of the quality team has sent you the following control chart showing the screen white balance measurements of pre-production. Is the process working properly?

a. Yes, because there are less than three points out of the control limits.
b. No, because there is a point below the lower specification limit.
c. No, because there is a point below the lower specification limit and one above the upper control limit.
d. Yes, because of the three points rule.

Answer to question and explanation

The correct answer is c. No, because there is a point below the lower specification limit and one above the upper control limit.

Explanation: control charts are used to determine whether a process has a predictable performance or not, in other words whether it is stable or not. Upper and lower specification limits are based on requirements, and should not be exceeded. Control limits are determined using statistical (sigma) calculations and should also not be exceeded by a stable process. Please note that answer b. No, because there is a point below the lower specification limit. is correct, but not complete.
