PM Question of the Week - week 17 2015

Dear colleague, welcome to the "PM question of the week" newsletter for week 17 2015.

In the present issue of our weekly newsletter we explore a situation that every project manager has faced at least once: the premature closing of a project.

Which of the following options is a good reason to prematurely close a project?
a. The project manager resigns.
b. The project scope is not well defined.
c. The project customer has declared bankruptcy.
d. The project is misaligned with the strategic objectives.

Answer to question and explanation

The correct answer is c. The project customer has declared bankruptcy.

Explanation: this is clearly a typical situation where you would want to close the project, as it has no reason to exist anymore since nobody will use, or pay for, the results.
Let's examine the other options:
a. The project manager resigns. is clearly a poor answer, as the role can be taken over by another project manager;
b. The project scope is not well defined. this is a bad issue but can (and should) be corrected.
d. The project is misaligned with the strategic objectives. this is another bad issue for the project, but again you as a project manager should work to correct the situation instead of closing the project.
